Important Information for Rabbit Owners

We now have more stock available of the new Filavac vaccine to protect your rabbit against Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease. However this is limited stock and will be allocated on a first come first served basis, please call to reserve a vaccine or to make an appointment.

Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease (also known as Rabbit Calicivirus Disease) is caused by Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease Virus (RHDV) and is a highly contagious, usually fatal disease that can affect all domestic and wild rabbits.

Signs of RHDV include lethargy, convulsions, spasms, difficulty breathing, bloody nasal discharge, blue gums, vocalisations, paralysis and many other distressing symptoms. There is no specific treatment available and it has a very high mortality rate.

Whilst the old Cylap vaccination covered the RHDV1 v351 strain of the virus (released illegally in 1997), it does NOT cover the RHDV1-K5 strain which was released by MPI in March/April 2018 and a newly discovered strain by the name of RHDV2 (origin currently unknown).

The disease can be protected against by vaccinating with Filavac vaccine which protects against all 3 strains of the virus.

Please call us on 09 537 0111 to make a booking or if you have any questions. Stocks are limited and they will be used on a first come first served basis.
